Flash! Boom! Sizzle!

21, August 2010, Centre for Life, Newcastle

The latest hands-on Science Session ‘Energetic Chemistry’ explores the often spectacular reactions achieved in a laboratory.

‘Schools out’ but young scientists don’t have to wait until September for their next science fix at the Lifelab within the Life Science Centre as a 2 hour highlight event called ‘Energetic Chemistry’ takes place on Saturday 21st August for 13-18yr olds.

Under the supervision of Master Chemist Noel Jackson, some of the most exciting and spectacular chemical experiments will be performed with full scientific explanations of how and why they work in the way they do and the precautions that must be taken to perform them safely.

Science Sessions are new weekend day sessions for at least thirty 13 - 18 year olds who simply can’t get enough science and are keen to learn beyond the limits of the school curriculum. Some teenagers may even be considering a scientific career. Under the friendly and knowledgeable supervision of the brilliant Science Explainers and the inspiring Noel Jackson, Life’s Head of Education, attendees will learn to make, question and discuss science in an informal, yet supportive atmosphere.

Places can be booked on 0191 243 8223 or by email sciencesessions@life.org.uk with an opportunity to join the mailing list. Tickets cost £5 payable on the door on the day.

Information is also available via www.facebook.com/sciencesessions.

Slavery Remembrance Day Festival

20, August 2010, Merseyside Maritime Museum

Henry Olonga the first Black cricketer to represent Zimbabwe at international level who also publicly protested against Robert Mugabe’s government launches the Slavery Remembrance Day Festival with a free memorial lecture on Friday 20 August 2010, 6pm at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock.

His lecture will share his story of his life and growing up in Zimbabwe. The memorial lecture is part of Liverpool’s 2010 Slavery Remembrance Day Festival, an annual international event that commemorates the lives of millions of enslaved Africans and their descendants and celebrates the spirit of resistance that ended slavery.

Olonga achieved international recognition in the 2003 World Cup for wearing a black armband in a Cricket World Cup in protest against Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe government. This act led to a warrant for his arrest on charges of treason (which carries the death penalty in Zimbabwe), forcing him to retire from international cricket and temporarily to go into hiding.

Slavery Remembrance Day starts at 11:00 on Monday 23 August 2010 with thought-provoking and entertaining activities celebrating Black culture and heritage include performances, live music, craft activities, talks and workshops, and are suitable for all the family. Market stalls will also be trading traditional West African and Caribbean food and crafts. At 13:00 Chief Angus Chukuemeka begins the libation on the River Mersey - a traditional African ceremony that remembers enslaved Africans and calls on ancestors to bless the event.

Entrance to the event is free but places are limited so booking is recommended. Call 0151 478 4543 or visit the Liverpool Museums website for further details.

FREE Evaluation workshop for STEM providers

21 July - Newcastle, 2 September - Bristol, 6 September - Birmingham

Evaluating activities appropriately is essential to providing schools and colleges with confidence that activities are worthwhile and matched to their students' needs. Each one-day event aims to address needs raised by the STEM Directories' future requirement that you make publicly available an appropriate evaluation of your work.

Thanks to funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering, the seminars are provided free of charge and a limited amount of financial support for travel and accommodation has also been provided by the National STEM Centre.

The workshops will take place at the following times:
