News from the Ecsite-uk Office: A prize for www.sciZmic.net
The sciZmic website (www.scizmic.net)
has been awarded a 4-star 'highly commended' award for educational 'usefulness'
by schoolzone
(www.schoolzone.co.uk).
Highly recommended sites have 'special educational merit, but may not be as relevant
to the UK national curriculum'. As the sciZmic site is aimed at out-of-hours science
clubs, it has achieved the highest award it could!
With regular new activities for clubs and a list of events across the UK, it is a thriving site. Should any centres have events they feel science and engineering clubs might enjoy, please let the web mistress know via scizmic@scizmic.net.
Developments in the Sector 1: The 2004 Altran Foundation for Innovation Award invites applications
In 2004, the Altran Foundation For Innovation is offering a year's free technology and support valued at 1 million euros to the best technological innovation or innovative concept that makes science appealing and engaging to the widest possible audience.
From idea to prototype to industrialised product, the winning entries will benefit from one year's Altran consulting expertise to accelerate your idea to a wider audience.
If you have an innovative project which focuses on the promotion of science and scientific culture, educational processes and the teaching of science from science discovery in primary school to advanced laboratory based research, take this opportunity to bring your project to life by participating in the Altran Foundation for Innovation award.
To apply for the 2004 Award, download your application form from our website www.fondation-altran.org and submit your project to candidat@fondation-altran.org
Developments in the Sector 2: Visions of Science photographic exhibition on offer
The national Novartis and The Daily Telegraph Visions of Science Photographic Awards, have a wonderful set of intriguing and inspiring science images that can be displayed at science centres around the UK.
This year, we are delighted to have the support of NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, and we have two sets of images and a CD which provides an opportunity for centres to display over 50 images.
There is no charge for the exhibition, but each site must pay for insurance and for delivery to the next centre. For information on the exhibition design and available dates please contact Katie Watt at visions-of-science@ksaevents.com or call 020 7613 5577.
Please contact us as soon as possible to let us know of your interest.
Developments in the Sector 3: UK venues sought for the touring Planetary Landscapes exhibition
With funding from the United States National Science Foundation, Chabot Space & Science Centre collaborated with internationally acclaimed artist Ned Kahn to create 11 interactive sculptures - visual and tactile analogies to natural processes that entice viewers to observe more closely forces existing on Earth and elsewhere in the Solar System.
This 150sqm exhibition is available to tour the UK. Hosts need to pay rental, insurance and transport between UK venues. Shipment from the US will not be included in the price. Normal fee is US$35,000 for a 12 week booking. If we can set up 8 to 9 head-to-tail bookings the price could go down to US$24,000 per venue.
