Science Briefing Conference Calls

Future Materials

18th December 2014, 3-4:30pm, Conference Call

This call forms part of a series of conference calls as part of the Explore Your Universe Phase 2 Programme to support the delivery of activities and events around the physical sciences and engineering. December's call will cover some of the cutting edge materials science supported by STFC, and how this research can be used in science and discovery centres to inspire audiences. The guest speakers are Dr Ann Terry and Prof Stephen Bennington who will be discussing their fascinating work in nanostructures for hydrogen storage (future fuels), and the applications of naturally occurring silk proteins (spider silk).

Please register - spaces are limited. Once you've registered we will send you the dial-in details and you will then receive the resources in advance of the call. Registration closes at 11pm on Tuesday 16th December 2014.

This conference call will use Powownow - all you need to do is dial a number from an ordinary phone (the call will be charged at the national rate).

Rosetta and Gaia Space Missions

27 August 2014, 3-4:30pm, Conference Call

This will be a short and snappy introduction to the science behind the Rosetta and Gaia space missions, with a chance to put your questions to the experts, including Dr. Ross Burgon, Rosetta in the UK – National Co-ordinator, based at the Open University; Professor Gerry Gilmore, UK Gaia Principle Investigator based at the University of Cambridge; Dr. Shaaron Leverment of Explorer Dome; and Dan Hillier and Jo Lewis of STFC.

Additionally, we will provide a package of resources that you can use to inspire your audiences about these missions, what they hope to achieve, and the poeple who make it all happen!

This session is being offered as part of the Explore Your Universe programme, supported by STFC, and is intended to be of primary benefit to anyone who is developing or delivering activities around the physical sciences to engage the public with contemporary research. This includes organisations that are involved in the Explore Your Universe network, members of Association for Science and Discovery Centres or the British Association of Planetaria. Others are welcome. If you have any questions, please contact us.
