ASDC is organising regular online meetings across the next two years to bring together space and astronomy public engagement colleagues to explore the latest space news and share ideas on engaging audiences on the most relevant space topics. These community calls are open to all space engagement practitioners, so please share the details with your networks.
Join us for the next Space Community Call on 2nd October 12pm-1.30 pm.
This call will be all about solar science, focussing in on our Sun.
Topics will include:
- the solar spectrum
- solar eclipses
- the aurora
- new resources and hands-on activity ideas
Keynote
Prof. Lucie Green
Lucie is a Professor of Physics based at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL’s Department of Space and Climate Physics and studies activity in the atmosphere of our nearest star, the Sun. In particular, looking at immense magnetic fields in the Sun’s atmosphere which sporadically erupt into the Solar System. If these eruptions reach the Earth they can drive major space weather events. She is interested in how the magnetic configuration of the eruptions relates to geomagnetic activity and what this means for those living in the UK.
Lucie is very active in public engagement with science and regularly gives public talks as well as supporting her departmental public engagement programme. She is Chair of Governors of the UCL Academy and is Chief Stargazer at the Society for Popular Astronomy. Her first popular science book is called “15 Million Degrees: journey to the centre of the Sun”, which discusses the history and current activities in solar physics. It is available in paperback and hardback.
Please register if you would like to attend and share with your colleagues. Registration will close noon on 1st October
Please get in touch if you would like to contribute to these community meetings or suggest topics and speakers to include.
