Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is a self-funded, independent educational charity dedicated to sparking curiosity and building science capital for all. Boasting two floors of hands-on interactive exhibits, the UK’s largest standalone planetarium and a wide-ranging events programme, the Science Centre is an important regional hub for informal science learning and a popular visitor attraction for families, schools and the general public.
The charity extends its reach through its trademark organisation STEM NOW and through successful partnerships with universities and industry. STEM NOW runs the South Central STEM Ambassador Hub on behalf of STEM Learning UK, coordinating more than 4,000 volunteers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. The team also manages the CREST Awards programme for 16 counties, industry and educational events, and continued professional development training and services.
Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is situated on the outskirts of Winchester within the South Downs National Park. The centre enjoys a stunning rural location with excellent road links from London and across the South of England. About the role
Due to an internal organisation we are recruiting to the exciting role of Head of Ingenuity, based in Winchester. This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to join an educational charity with a dedicated, friendly and supportive team. The Head of Ingenuity will be responsible for the artistic direction and delivery of an exciting, hands-on, interactive exhibition to delight our visitors and spark their curiosity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
As Head of Ingenuity you will be able to work and plan strategically whilst having the particular skills to ensure that all elements of the exhibit and its fabrication have are robust and safe, have scientific and educational integrity, that concepts are communicated clearly and with the optimum level of interpretation and that accessibility is fully considered for all our visitors.
The Head of Ingenuity will have the ability to communicate across a wide range of stakeholders, building relationships, raising funds and driving the business. They will also have planning skills and a deadline driven, can do attitude. This role offers the right candidate an exciting and varied role with the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the business and represent the charity nationally and internationally.
The post-holder will line inspire and manage a small team of technicians who maintain and repair the exhibition. You will be required to conduct regular performance reviews with your team, set objectives, and provide coaching. As a supervisor and enabler of people you will be expected to plan, inspire, supervise and delegate, and continually review and monitor working practices and patterns. Flexibility is essential as Winchester Science Centre relies on a small team of dedicated individuals working closely together to support and develop the charity, so occasional additional support duties will be required in other areas of the business.
