The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is taking part in Operation Earth a national project funded and developed by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) and ASDC (Association for Science and Discovery Centres). Operation Earth is a one year programme that will engage, inspire and involve school-age children and their families with NERC’s world-leading environmental science research. The programme will highlight the relevance of contemporary environmental science issues to everyone’s daily lives and to society’s future.
As part of the project the Museum of Natural History will be hosting live science shows. Science Presenters will work in pairs to deliver the shows which feature two characters, Earthy (planet Earth) and a doctor. The main storyline is that Earthy is feeling under the weather and is going to the doctors for a check-up. The target audience for the family show is children aged 6-11 years and their accompanying adults and will last approximately 30 mins. The show will cover a variety of topics exploring human impact on the planet’s land, sea and air, which include climate change, ocean acidification, chemical pesticides, air pollutions and plastics. The show will feature hands-on and interactive experiments and investigations which include audience participation.
This role would suit someone who is studying or has studied a science degree, preferably in the natural sciences, particularly keen to gain more experience in outreach and science communication. We are looking for someone who is passionate about sharing environmental science and the importance of protecting the planet.
You will need to be available and committed for all of the following:
- Attend a training session on Friday 9th February- 4 hours.
- Observe a show delivered by Museum staff on Tuesday 13th February.
- Presenters must also be able to deliver 4-5 family shows on a rota basis over the period of March – October 2018.
- Shows will be on Saturdays or during the school holidays of no regular pattern (but already programmed) and presenters will be required to be present from 1-4pm, which includes two 30 mins show.
- Presenters are required to learn a script for both the role of the doctor and Earthy.
